Building Act changes removing barriers to using overseas products

Submitted 5 July 2024

BRANZ supports the Government’s ambitions to lower building costs, streamline the consenting system, make it easier to build and increase the use of trusted products.

We are open to working with the MBIE on exploring ways our research and expertise can help achieve the ambitions of the Building Act changes being proposed.

Inherent risks do exist for new overseas products being used for building and construction in New Zealand, as we have specific ways of building, using products and training our workforce. However, we feel that with careful consideration and mitigation of these risks, the objectives of the proposed Building Act changes can be met.

BRANZ's significant technical expertise and capability can provide advice on these changes. We welcome further discussion with MBIE on ways we can assist – for instance, identifying risks and recommending mitigations and opportunities to learn from other international examples.
